What is Language Proficiency?

In foreign language classes, we strive to build language proficiency. Language Proficiency is divided into several different levels based on what skills language users can accomplish. Throughout the French courses students take at WHB, they are working to increase their proficiency level. The course objectives for each level align with a language proficiency level as shown below:

The Three Modes of Communication

In class we work to build our communicative proficiency. There are 3 different modes of communication: Interpersonal, Interpretative, & Presentational. Watch the video or read the infographic below for more details on the 3 modes of communication.

Beyond Communicative Proficiency:

In addition to building communicative proficiency, students are immersed in the Francophone culture through authentic literature, films, podcasts, music, cartoons, newspaper articles, blogs, magazines, and a variety of other media sources. Through the exploration of the French culture, students work to meet the other standards set for language learners. These standards help students to build cultural competency, think critically about their culture and other cultures, make comparisons and connections between their life and the outside world, and become a part of a global language-learning community.
