The goal of this project was to evaluate the potential of using machine learning algorithms in ground combat navigation systems. This project experimented with machine learning algorithms on long-wave infrared (LWRI) images instead of traditional RGB images.
Existing models were adjusted to process LWRI images in order to evaluate the potential of using Deep Learning for navigation. This was done by predicting the depth of each pixel in a video-frame with only LWRI frames as input. The results were promising and supported the direction for further research. The CRCV and CREOL lab at UCF appled for and earn $4.5 million in funding to futher research in this area (click here for more details).
