This is undoubtedly one of the levadas you don’t want to miss. A magnificent trail of the Madeira’s Laurissilva forest where you can enjoy the unique vegetation of this UNESCO natural heritage.

The first part of the trail consists of a mixture of endemic and introduced vegetation after the discovery of the island. You can see various perspectives of the village at a distance.

In the second part, the trail penetrates into the interior of the island, that stills remains the same since before its discovery, more than five centuries ago. In this path you find the natural flora and fauna of Madeira, which include laurel, heather, chaffinch, among many, many others.

This trail takes place in the immense and magnificent mountains of Madeira. Along the way you can enjoy the wonderful landscapes composed by the formidable rock formations, sometimes covered by the clouds and the villages that can be seen in the distance. Also in this journey you can visit the three highest peaks of Madeira: Pico do Areeiro, Pico das Torres and Pico Ruivo.

This is a mountain trail so it requires some physical preparation and endurance for hikers, who are faced with many ups and downs. However, the effort required is offset by extraordinary views that the walk provides.

Once at Pico Ruivo you can relax, have a snack or visit the shelter. Finally, be sure to go to the top of the peak and elate with the landscape and breathtaking views of the peaks and villages. The trail starts at Levada do Alecrim, in the area of Rabaçal. Follow the course of the levada until you get to a detour to the path that will take you to Lagoa do Vento.

Turn left on the path and start to descend. From here the path radically changes and you start walking in the heart of nature. The floor is sometimes irregular and can be slippery, so caution is advised. Immerse yourself in the natural surroundings and enjoy a completely different and unique walk!

Enjoy the panoramic views from the several viewpoints than you find along the trail.

Continue down until you reach the magnificent lagoon Lagoa do Vento. The immensity, serenity and beauty of this lagoon make of this place an inspiring place! Here you will find yourself at the top of the Risco waterfall.

When leaving the lagoon, walk toward the house Rabaçal, where you can rest and relax for a while before climbing an alternative path, which will take you until the end of this walk, in Rabaçal.

This trail in particular, is without a doubt one of the most beautiful in Madeira. You can enjoy the natural heritage of the island, since the trail is full of endemic species of regional flora and fauna. The magnificent vegetation fills the eyes and soul of the hikers, involving them in a peaceful environment. The shining sun infiltrates between the laurels and other plants of this area.

In this quiet walk the hiker goes side by side with the levada that flows slowly along the trail. If you’re lucky you can see a trout swimming along that hides when feels our presence. Here and there arises a chaffinch that waits for generosity of those who are passing by to share some bread.

At the beginning of this trail stand out the well cultivated farmland, providing a pleasant sight to walkers. Among them stand out the fantastic panoramic views of the valley and the beautiful village of Ponta do Sol, that this route offers us.

Enjoy the walk and all that it has to offer. Delight yourself with the sights, the endemic flora and fauna and waterfalls.

By the end of the route you can climb the path that leads to the Levada Nova. Once there, follow the opposite direction until you reach the impressive waterfall of this Levada. It is certainly a fascinating vision that deserves a few moments of contemplation before continuing.

You can continue the path by Levada Nova, although it is important to know that there are several areas with abyss and no protection, so is not recommended for inexperienced hikers.

The return is made by the same route, arriving back at the Church of the Lombada

Along the way, you can marvel yourself with the fabulous seascapes of the north and south of the Island. It is impossible to describe the wonderful feeling provided by the contrast between the serenity of south sea and the rough sea of the north.

Während des Weges hat man oft Gegenwind, der in dieser Zone charakteristisch ist. Sie können aber schöne Exemplare der einmaligen Flora und Fauna der Region genießen.

Es gibt auch sehr kuriose Felsformationen wegen dem vulkanischen Ursprung der Insel. Genießen Sie die Einzelheiten.

Nach einigen Kilometern gehen Sie zum Strand hinunter und genießen Sie die Ruhe und das frische türkisblaue Meer der Südküste. Nutzen Sie die Gelegenheit zum Schwimmen und kommen Sie frischer und erleichterter zurück.

From this belvedere it’s possible to contemplate the many peaks of Madeira Island, from which stands out the highest: Pico Ruivo (1861m) and Pico do Areeiro (1817m). Pico do Gato, Pico das Torres and the well-known Penhad’Águia also constitutes part of this breathtaking scenery.

This place it’s also ideal to bird watching, since there is a huge variety that nicely greets visitors of this belvedere. Between this nice little creatures stands out the Firecrest, the Chaffinch, the Grey Wagtails, Blackbirds, Robins, Buzzards or the very rare Madeira’s long-toed pigeon.

The way back is made through the same way but don’t think that you saw everything yet. One of peculiarities of the Madeira’s levadas is that each time you visit, there’s always new findings, experiences and sensations that will make this activity unique.

The beginning of the trail is accessible to anyone, made in the Levada that offers magnificent perspectives over Machico until you reach the Viewpoint of Boca do Risco, which offers a breathtaking view of the north coast of the island. Enjoy all the surroundings and scenic beauty of this spot.

From here towards the Porto da Cruz the difficulty of the path is very. The trail is made by the hillsid overlooking the vast Atlantic Ocean, in a narrow path with no protection, so it is recommended only for experienced hikers.

Along the way, take some time to enjoy the sights and all the surrounding of this walk. Once you reach Porto da Cruz you can relax for a while and get to know this location of the island, full of unique cultures and traditions.
