Living the moments,
witnessing through theatre
【Creative Origins】
Living the moments,
witnessing through theater.
In 2016, Rolling Puppet Alternative Theatre’s first Object Documentary Theater piece, Made in Macau 2.0, was developed at the Archa Theatre in the Czech Republic. Drawing from the personal and family history of creator Teresa Lam, the work reflected the social transformations of Macau. This "Macau story" has kept us "rolling" across the globe for international tours and educational outreach, sparking widespread resonance.
In 2026, Rolling Puppet launches a new chapter, Made in Macau 3.0, to trace the artistic and urban footprints of the past decade. During the creative process, the two creators were invited by the world-renowned Eugene O'Neill Theater Center (USA)—a premier organization dedicated to discovering and nurturing new works and emerging artists—to conduct a 19-day artist residency and teach Object Documentary Theater. This invitation provided another opportunity to engage in a global dialogue and expand the space for self-reflection.
This performance serves as a work-in-progress draft presented following the residency.
【About the show】
How have you been these years?
What have you done?
Those unspoken moments,
Those unsettled fragments,
Those small personal memories you thought only you remembered,
yet they overlap with the memories of others within the theater.
Teresa Lam and Kevin Chio use "Object Documentary Theatre" as a guide to sincerely record a decade where life and art have become inseparable. In the winding alleys of Macau where East meets West, they established a puppet theatre group. From connecting with the international puppetry scene to deep-rooting themselves in local culture, their path of artistic practice carries both the passage of time in this small town and its urban shifts. A decade captured in a single moment—this is an honest dialogue between our theatre and this city.

Created by Teresa Lam and Kevin Chio during their residency at the Archa Theatre in Prague, Made in Macau 2.0 is a production that integrates object puppetry, storytelling, and documentary theater, aiming to re-examine Macanese identity through the lens of everyday objects.
Using private family memories as a starting point, the work chronicles Macau’s transformation from a 1960s manufacturing society to a global tourism city, reflecting the authentic life experiences of local residents amidst the profound social shifts of the era.
Since the 2.0 version premiered in 2016, it has toured extensively across the globe, with performances in Prague, Hong Kong, Macau, Yokohama, Taipei, Kirkenes (Norway), Chicago, and the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center (Waterford, Connecticut, USA).
The performance handles universal contemporary issues with an unpretentious approach, and its precise synthesis of social observation and artistic form has received high acclaim from numerous international theater experts, artists, and audiences.
