This photo portfolio invites you into the heart of Water Valley, Mississippi, a small railroad town famous for its community and locally owned shops. I set out to explore the people of Water Valley, but more importantly, I aimed to photograph local businesses, shop owners, and small moments involving people, with an emphasis on what these people buy and sell, and to explore the overall relationship surrounding consumerism.

The B.T.C. Old Fashioned Grocery Store was opened in 2010. It has locally sourced produce and fresh, everyday items. It is also a restaurant to grab a quick bite, as well as an antique store. It is a classic staple in Water Valley, Mississippi, and helps to promote shopping locally, which helps benefit small shop owners and retailers while keeping unique staples in the home. During my time here, I was able to pick up a souvenir for my mom for Thanksgiving, while also meeting the kindest locals who suggested many items to try.
I recommend that anyone go and check out the B.T.C. Old-Fashioned Grocery Store if you are looking for a fun, bright, and unique local shopping experience. There is definitely an item for everyone!
Water Valley, Mississippi, makes it known that it is a unique town that primarily focuses on local shops and businesses that cater to the needs of its residents at the forefront. I was welcomed into this town with open arms and bright smiles, and was able to get a better understanding of their consumer habits that truly make this town its own unique space.
My time in Water Valley served as a reminder to venture out of my own "velvet ditch" and to become acquainted with other neighboring towns and the people. I thoroughly enjoyed shopping locally and finding unique items to bring home to friends and family; I will definitely be making more trips back to this town to see the kind, familiar faces as well as to get my hands on the Watermelon during its growing season.
