Doctoral school (SDOSE). In charge: Thierry Kirat.
Mathematics program. In charge: Madalina Olteanu.
Enrolment and funding options
Prior to enrolment: have a PhD-project with a mathematician from Paris Dauphine University, who has the accreditation to be a research supervisor (HDR).
Funding: details on different funding resources are given below.
Important: whatever your funding, you need to enrol in the Dauphine Doctoral School within the dates indicated below.
Duties during your PhD
"Obligation de formation": each year you should follow at least one of
an M2 course
a doctoral school course
a weekly seminar
a summer school
During your first year, you should also follow a "Formation à l'éthique scientifique", organized by the Collège Doctoral of PSL.
Alternatively to the training organized by PSL, you may register and follow a MOOC such as the one proposed by the University of Bordeaux here.
This information must be filled in Adum!
If you do not intend to defend by the end of the academic year, you should:
update your profile on ADUM in June.
if you are a 1st or a 2nd year student: sit for a CST ("comité de suivi de thèse") in June. Enrol in June for the next year.
if you are a 3rd year student: sit for a CST ("comité de suivi de thèse") before September. Enrol in September for the next year.
You should pass a "Pré-soutenance" during the last year of your PhD (ideally six months before the defence). The rules and the application form may be found here.
Conferences
It is important that you attend conferences. They must be prepared administratively for financial and insurance reasons.
Funding
Start by asking the conference organizers whether some financial support is available for PhD students.
Next, ask the chair of the mathematics program for authorisation, with your advisor CC'ed, and with an estimate of the remaining cost. You will be informed whether travel expenses can be funded by the Doctoral School or by the CEREMADE.
Make a "demande d'ordre de mission". This may take some time, while train or flight tickets may get expensive if booked at the last minute, so you should plan your trips well in advance.
Other sources of funding exist for longer travels, besides CEREMADE or the Ecole Doctorale. For instance:
Jean Walter Zellidja scholarships, provided by Académie Française, for visits of about one year in a foreign laboratory (application to be filled in at Ecole doctorale usually before January).
Châteaubriand scholarships, provided by Ambassade de France in the USA (next call in October 2023).
The defence
When your PhD supervisor agrees that the thesis should be defended, it is advised to fill in a defence request, at least 8 weeks before the defence.
See more details on the webpage of Ecole Doctorale.
After the defence
General information about careers in academics, especially in France, may be found here.
One-year positions called ATER are made available in French universities. Such a position may be convenient during the year of your defence, but it requires quite a lot of teaching.
In academics, typical positions after a PhD are postdoctoral positions. Usually you will need help from your advisor to get to be known and find such a position.
