What is a Nose Flute?
The nose flute is a musical instrument primarily found in Polynesia and the Pacific Rim, with some versions existing in Africa. It is played by blowing air through the nostril into a tube with fingerholes to create sound
The version of the nose flute I designed is a lot easier to use and when playing it reminds me of the sound used on the children's TV program from the 1970's called "The Clangers."
How do you play the Nose flute?
Step 1 - Place the nose flute up your nostles
Step 2 - keep your mouth open
Step 3 - Breath out through your nose (Note: Dont breath out of your mouth otherwise there will be no sound)
Step 4 - To change the tone of the sound move your tongue back and forward in your mouth
Why I Designed the Nose flute?
Back in 2017, I was working and, unconsciously while deep in thought was blowing over a pen top that made a low-pitched whistling noise. This accidental discovery sparked a bizarre notion, "Why not try and create an instrument the can be played in an unusual way." A few evening later I had designed and 3D printed my nose flute. Honestly, just playing it – sticking something up your nose to make music – was hilarious and had me in fits of laughter
I actually thought I'd invented something totally new, until I hopped online and saw the ancient nose flute and other similar weird creations. So, yeah, not exactly a groundbreaking invention. Still funny though.
Anyway in 2018 I took a trip Edinborugh Fringe Festival and took a long 40 nose flute to give away to the public, and one comedy act used it in their show which is sort of my claim to fame (Ego Boost LOL!) Below are a few videos I took of this
