FAQs

"How long does it take to learn bagpipes?"

Most students can play the practice chanter within 6 months and be up on their bagpipes in about 12 – 18 months, although the timeline will vary student to student.

"What drums can I play and how long does it take to learn?"

We have snare (side drum), tenor, and bass drums. Students can learn to play on a practice pad within 6 months to a year, and be up on drums shortly after that.

"Does the band take beginners?"

The band accepts all students who are interested in learning.

"Do I need to know how to read music?"

It can be helpful to understand music, but it is not required. If you do not know how to read music we will teach you.

"I am an adult. Am I too old to start?"

You are never too old to start! While we do teach children under the age of 18, most of the band is made of adult learners.

"Do I have to buy bagpipes or drums to start?"

No, you will start on a practice chanter or with a practice pad.

"What will I need to bring to lessons?"

An openness to feedback and willingness to learn!

"What are the costs to join?"

Initially, you will want a practice chanter which cost about $90 or drum sticks/mallets are about $40. Drummers will be provided with a drum and harness. Bagpipes cost about $1,200 but you may also need to purchase a case for them and maintenance items later on.

The uniform costs are approximately $1000.

While none of these are cheap, these purchases are expected to be made over the course of several years.
