Identify your core macro skills/competencies and determine the type of macro position you are seeking prior to starting the formal job search process.
Use position titles, skills, and responsibilities NOT the term “social work” when using career search engines
Broaden your scope. Similar to micro and mezzo social workers, macro social workers are found in many settings. As a result, be sure your search for positions include:
Non-profit agencies
For-profit organizations
Universities
Local, state, and federal government legislative offices
Local, state, and federal government agencies
Advocacy organizations
Research institutes and centers
Foundations
Explore positions at think tanks when seeking research-focused roles (Link to US think tanks: https://guides.library.upenn.edu/c.php?g=1035991&p=7509974)
Check job boards and review member emails of professional associations and organizations that typically have job boards and share job postings (Association for Community Organization and Social Action, National Association of Social Workers, Young Non-Profit Professionals Network, etc.)
Refrain from solely relying on career search engines and job boards
Small non-profits don’t have the funds to advertise on the major job boards, so go directly to their website to view available openings
Network with professionals from other disciplines (public administration, public health, psychology, criminal justice, law, human services etc.)
Identify the networking opportunities in your area for professionals interested in community organizing, leadership, lobbying, advocacy, and specific interest areas
Join advocacy organizations to find others interested in macro-level change
