Perivolaki belongs to the Municipality of Lagkadas, in the regional unit of Thessaloniki, and has a population of approximately 1,300 inhabitants. The area of the municipality corresponds to parts of three territories of ancient Macedonia: Mygdonia, Crestonia, and Bisaltia. During the Byzantine period, Slavic incursions into Macedonia led to the settlement of the Rynchinoi—a Celto-Vlach tribe—in the wider Lagkadas area. The plain of Lagkadas later served as the base of the numerous military forces of the Ottoman Sultan Murad II before his attack on Thessaloniki, an event that resulted in the city’s final capture in 1430. After its conquest by the Ottomans, Lagkadas was renamed Lagkazanta. One of the most glorious moments in the region’s history during the Ottoman period was the participation of its population in the first phase of the Greek Revolution in 1821. The violent suppression of the uprising in Macedonia became known as the “Chalasmos” (“destruction”), and most villages experienced demographic and economic decline. The region celebrated its liberation from Ottoman rule on 27 October 1912.
