MA Correctional Facilities

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has several agencies responsible for the care and custody of incarcerated individuals.  Below please find more information about these facilities and how to best contact them.

Jails & Houses of Corrections

Local control of jails is provided by county sheriff's offices.  Typically, County Houses are for holding individuals awaiting trial or for those with lesser time on their sentence - days, weeks, months, or a couple of years.

State Prisons

State control of prisons is overseen by the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS), but executed by the MA Department of Correction.  Inmates in the Department of Correction's care are serving significantly longer sentences.  Individuals are assigned to either maximum, medium, minimum, or pre-release security levels as determined by the classification system.
