The Whānau System
Goals of the Whānau System
To foster positive, respectful and accountable relationships between members of the student body and also between students, staff and home.
To create a nurturing environment within the college by mixing students of all ages.
To provide leadership and mentoring opportunities for senior students.
Elements of the Successful Whānau System
Every student has a member of staff that is there just for them as a mentor / supporter / advocate / guide.
Leadership opportunities are created and embraced.
A staff member becomes a member of the Whānau with the students.
The college pastoral programme is supported.
There is a constructive and supportive link between home and school.
There is a vehicle for discussing issues such as MAC Values, career opportunities, goal setting and house spirit.
Mentoring opportunities exist between students and (at times) staff.
Year 7 and 8 students feel that they are part of the college inside and outside the classroom.
Students’ progress is monitored and they are conferenced and supported accordingly.
Student voice can be heard.
The college retains the focus of individual attention throughout a period of growth.
