Talk show
October 03, 2025
MAC's TalkShow is initiated for a purpose to expand the mathematical understanding into the Cambodian community, and encourage people to do more mathematics and science in general. In this program, we invite people from different mathematical background and careers to share their experience in learning, doing research, and some perspectives onto the scientific development and well-being as a whole. First, we aim to start this event in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, and by and by spread it all over the various part of the country, from the high schools to the university levels.
We also would like to mention that each of our TalkShow contains two speakers and it is a free of cost event, plus snacks during the break time. We do not impose any restrictions on the boundaries of religion, race, caste, gender, place of birth, or any of them.
Monyrattanak SENG, PhD
Title of the first talk show :
"From proof to pedagogy: A Journey through mathematics and education''
With a background in pure mathematics and a current role as a teacher trainer, the speaker has transformed from a seeker of abstraction, rigor, and theoretical elegance into a designer of pedagogical clarity, skill development, and classroom realism. This talk offers a personal perspective on learning and teaching mathematics, exploring how mathematical thinking can evolve beyond proof to empower learners, inform teaching practice, and respond to the cultural and civic needs of Cambodian education.
A brief biography of the speaker:
Monyrattanak obtained his PhD degree in 2022, from Centro de Investigación en Matemáticas (CIMAT), Mexico. He wrote his PhD thesis on C^*-algebra, a subject where it lies at the intersection between analysis and algebra. Currently, he is working at the National Institute of Education (NIE), with a main role as a trainer of future mathematics teachers and as a Cambodian educational transformer in general. Apart from this, he is also serving as a contract mathematics lecturer at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP), where he has taught various subjects including real analysis, general topology, and measure theory.
Vanny DOEM, PhD Fellow
Title of the second talk show:
''Discourse on fear and method of mathematics''
The most difficult thing in mathematics is to overcome fear. What is the fear of mathematics? Fear of making errors, fear of asking stupid questions; fear is the real enemy of our imagination and the obstacle that blocks understanding and makes us feel like fools. Fear is natural, and it happens to everyone. Then how can one overcome this natural phenomenon? The speaker will talk about this practical discourse and experiment with each technique in possible rigor, through the reflection of an established mathematician, Alexander Grothendieck, plus his personal inner experience.
A brief biography of the speaker:
Vanny is research fellow at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, India. Currently, he is writing his PhD thesis on homotopy theory, particualary on equivariant rational homotopy groups of sphere spectrum. Vanny has also served as a general organizer at the Mathematical Association of Cambodia (MAC), from 2020 till date. There he has helped many Cambodian students to do their higher studies abroad and has lectured many advanced topics in theoretical mathematics, including algebraic topology, representation theory, and homological algebra. He also has involved in a leading several missions in developing mathematical sector in Cambodia: organizing monthly webinars, workshops, and talk shows in various institutions in the country.
