Overview
Tarangire National Park.
The Tarangire ecosystem is known for its significant migratory movement, making it one of the more seasonal parks in northern Tanzania. The Dry season, spanning from June to October, witnesses the influx of vast herds of animals to the Tarangire River. The elephant population during this period is particularly impressive, rendering the park a must-visit destination for any safari expedition in northern Tanzania.

Time to Visit Tarangire National Park.
During the wetter months of November to May, there are fewer tourists in the park, and the local wildlife is more widely distributed as water sources are readily available throughout the area. Conversely, during the Dry season, from June to October, animals tend to converge around the remaining water sources, making them easier to spot. It is recommended to bring warm clothing for early morning game drives during this time of the year, as the temperature can be quite low when the sun is just rising.
Weather & Climate
Tarangire experiences a fragmented Wet season from November to May, with light showers marking the end of the year, and heavier rainfall occurring from March through May. In between, there is a brief dry period that offers a glimpse of what is to come during the Dry season from June to October. The weather in Tarangire is generally pleasant, with a temperate climate. The Wet season comprises two parts - the 'long rains' from March to May and the 'short rains' from November to December. Rainfall typically occurs in the afternoons and seldom persists throughout the day.
Landscape/View
The Tarangire River is the main highlight of the park. Despite the arid conditions, the park boasts a dense vegetation cover comprising acacia shrubs and mixed woodland. However, what stands out the most are the colossal baobab trees that are scattered throughout the park in large numbers. In the southern and eastern parts of the park, a significant seasonal swamp network can be found, which serves as a crucial water catchment area.
Wildlife
In Tarangire, one can spot herds of up to 300 elephants searching for underground streams in the dry riverbeds. Other migratory animals like wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest, and eland also flock to the shrinking lagoons. Abandoned termite mounds often serve as homes for mongoose colonies. While all major predators are present in the park, they may not be as easily spotted as in some of the other parks in northern Tanzania due to the thick vegetation cover.
During the Dry season, Tarangire becomes an exceptional wildlife destination, with the Tarangire River attracting vast numbers of migratory animals such as wildebeest, zebra, common eland, hartebeest, gazelle, buffalo, and more elephants than one can imagine. Lion sightings are also quite frequent during this time. Tarangire is also home to rare dry-country antelopes, such as the fringe-eared oryx and the peculiar long-necked gerenuk. The swampy areas in the park's southern region offer a unique wildlife viewing experience, including wallowing elephants and buffalo, the Silale Swamp lion pride, and occasionally, wild dogs. It is not uncommon to spot big pythons in trees during the dry-up of the swamps.
