Best
Time to Visit Serengeti National Park.
For optimal wildlife watching, it's recommended to plan your visit during the drier months (June to October). June and July are especially ideal, as this is when the remarkable wildebeest migration typically crosses the plains. Late January and February are the best months for observing predators in action, as this is when the wildebeests give birth during a break in the annual rains.
Weather & Climate
During the Dry season (June to October) in the Serengeti, temperatures remain warm during the day but can drop significantly at night. In the Wet season (November to May), temperatures rise slightly but can still get chilly due to occasional cold fronts. Overall, the climate in the Serengeti is mild and comfortable, with cool to cold temperatures in the early mornings and at night. Warm clothing is recommended.
The Serengeti has two Wet seasons: the 'short rains' from November to December and the 'long rains' from March to May. Rainfall during these seasons is usually in the form of afternoon thundershowers, and it rarely rains all day. The Dry season from June to October is the best time for wildlife watching, especially for those interested in seeing the wildebeest migration.
Landscape/View
The landscape of Serengeti is famous for its expansive grassy plains in the southeast while the northern part is characterized by rocky hills. Forests, valleys, and rivers can be found towards the west. The region also features several "koppies," which are granite outcrops that rise above the plains. The Serengeti is a vast and breathtaking wilderness, with big open skies and a feeling of untamed natural beauty.
Wildlife
The wildlife viewing in Serengeti is exceptional, making it one of the top destinations for safari in Africa. The park is home to an abundance of major safari animals. You can easily spot cheetah and four out of the Big 5, while black rhino sightings are rare. The park also boasts an impressive array of other predators such as spotted hyena (often spotted in the morning), jackal, and bat-eared fox. As Tanzania's best park, the Serengeti is teeming with wildlife year-round. Huge herds of buffalo, as well as smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, roam the park. Antelopes such as eland, topi, kongoni, and impala are also common sightings. The big cats are easily seen, with lions often found on a kill, cheetahs commonly spotted on the southeastern plains, and leopards frequently seen lazing in big trees along the Seronera River. The Serengeti is most famous for the annual wildebeest migration, which sees over 8 million animals cross the open plains, including more than 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras, and 300,000 Thomson's gazelles in search of fresh grazing. Predators follow the migration, making for exciting sightings of big cats hunting. Spotted hyena, golden jackal, and black-backed jackal are also often seen in the area.
