Background: I completed my undergraduate and master's degrees at the University of Cambridge, graduating with a BA and MMath in 2023. I wrote my Part III essay on "Khovanov Homology and Embedded Surfaces". I joined the LSGNT in September 2023.
As a mathematician, I am the most excited about anything that I can visualise. I first fell in love with knots during my first foray into research in summer 2021, when I was lucky enough to be a Philippa Fawcett intern at the University of Cambridge, working on a project titled "SL_2(R) Character Varieties of Knot Complements" supervised by Jacob Rasmussen. The next summer I had the opportunity to write an essay with Henry Wilton titled "Non-Positively Curved Cube Complexes".
Officially I am called Mariëtte, but I go by Maartje
This is pronounced Ma (as in map)- rt (as in turtle) -yuh
Some topological crochet, made during a course hosted by artist Shiying Dong and the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath)
Other interests: Outside of maths I am a keen knitter and sewist and occasional crocheter - I am always excited to talk to people about yarn! I also love reading fiction, especially in the romance genre. I am a singer, now with Imperial College choir but formerly of Downing College Chapel Choir. I also occasionally run half-marathons and my goal is to run a marathon before I get my PhD.
