The Building Electrification Accelerator works to accelerate equitable building decarbonization in Massachusetts via municipal action.
In 2020, a dozen towns and cities partnered with the renewable energy nonprofit RMI to form the program.
Since then, the BEA has grown to include participants from over 50 municipalities and organizations and focuses on policies and programs to equitably electrify new and existing buildings.
The BEA is fiscally sponsored by the Center for the Study of Public Policy, a 501(c)3 tax-exempt, non-profit organization.
The world needs a zero-emissions building stock by 2045 to meet our climate goals—yet most communities are still installing gas infrastructure and appliances in new buildings that will last into the next century.
In Massachusetts, our Next Generation Climate Bill, signed into law in March 2021, requires that carbon emissions are reduced by 50% by 2030 and 100% by 2050.
Since emissions from buildings constitute approximately 30% of all emissions in the state, buildings are a critical sector to be decarbonized.
Given the housing crisis and the unjust distribution of housing and building-related resources in the Commonwealth, a central part of our work is addressing the quality, affordability, accessibility, and health of homes as we decarbonize.
