If your device is listed as a supported device I recommend following the instructions here -updates-from-the-lvfs and install the GUI which will enable you to keep track and update your device's firmware. Going through these steps seemed to fix my issues.

I checked my own system. Running fwupdmgr get-devices shows the Thunderbolt listed at version 14.00. I need to update to 20.00, the version that is now available in testing. I tried updating with fwupdmgr get-updates, fwupdmgr update, but it made no mention of Thunderbolt and was still stuck at version 14.00. I checked fwupdmgr get-remotes, and it seems there is a remote lvfs-testing which is available, but currently disabled. This must be the remote containing version 20.00.

Is it smart to enable lvfs-testing? Would I be automatically be applying unstable firmware updates to other devices as well? Can I enable, update only the Thunderbolt controller, and then disable? What should I double check in my system before enabling and updating from lvfs-testing?

Dell has been a supporter ever since the early website prototypes. Mario Limonciello (Senior Principal Software Development Engineer from Dell) has worked with me on both the lvfs-website project and fwupd in equal measure, and I consider him a co-maintainer of both projects. Now the LVFS supports firmware updates on 72 different devices, from about 30 vendors, and has supplied over 5 million firmware updates to Linux clients.

There is a Python package named hdfs which supports WebHDFS accesses from Python, and it is the most closelyaligned open source project to LVFS. It is essentially an SDK for WebHDFS and supports everything lvfssupports, because LVFS uses hdfs.

lvfs is not yet published to the PyPI repository. When it is, we'll update how to install it here.Because PyPI already has a package named lvfs, the package name will likely be different when itdoes get published.

LVFS configuration is stored in ~/.config/lvfs.yml because we expect that either you are in a container,in which case the home directory is specific to an application, or you are using a laptop, where you willlikely want to handle development keys or credentials for several projects at once.

Once fwupd is installed, create a configuration file at /etc/fwupd/remotes.d/. fwupd will default to using lvfs.conf, so you will need to either delete the file or set it to Enabled=false.

The list of approved updates can be enabled by adding ApprovalRequired=true to the remote configuration file, e.g. lvfs.conf. Once enabled, the list of approved updates can be set in daemon.conf using a comma delimited list. 006ab0faaa
