I offer friendly, welcoming Argentine tango classes in Durham/Newcastle for beginners and experienced dancers.
Argentine Tango is a unique and emotional dance, offering a perfect balance of connection, passion and elegance. For me, it’s not only a beautifull form of social dancing but also a powerful artistic expression. What makes tango so fascinating is the combination of musicality, technique, and the physical and emotinal benefits it provides. Tango challenges and strengthens the body, improving balance, coordination, and muscle engagement, all while developing emotional and artistic connection with your partner.
Whether you're dancing in a social setting or performing on stage, tango brings a special energy and delight to both the dancers and the audience. The beauty of tango lies in its versatility—every dance has its own story, shaped by the connection between partners and the music. It's a dance that speaks to the heart and, through careful study, can be mastered and deeply enjoyed.
I’ve been passionate about dance since I was 7, with a deep connection to the world of music and rhythm. My great-grandfather (Francisco "Tano" Lauro) was a renowned bandoneonista, composer, and orchestra director who worked alongside the legendary Astor Piazzolla. Over the years, my love for Argentine Tango has only deepened.
After years of dedicated study and training, I graduated as a dance teacher, and I've been fortunate to share this beautiful art form with others ever since. I had the privilege of teaching and performing in Argentina, where my team and I won the first place on the most important Carnival Show in Corrientes, before moving to the UK in 2023. Since arriving, I’ve been teaching at renowned institutions like Dance City (Newcastle) and Instep (Durham University).
Teaching Tango allows me to stay connected with my Argentine roots and the traditions of this timeless dance, and I truly enjoy guiding students through their own unique dance journeys. I believe that dance is more than just movement—it’s a powerful way to connect with yourself and others, express emotions, and build confidence. My teaching style combines patience, dynamism, a focus on technique and the connection between the energy of both dancers and the music, ensuring that every student, regardless of their experience level, leaves each class with a sense of accomplishment.
In addition to teaching, I’m a choreographer. I've designed Tango choreographies for Dance City and Instep as well as other corporal experession choreographies in Argentina. I'm also designing weddings dances for couples. Since I arrived in Durham, I've been invited to teach at renown events such as The Newcastle Congress 2026, Durham Global Week 2024, and a Tango Workshop at Bowburn Hall Hotel 2023. I enjoy fostering a welcoming community for Tango lovers to dance and connect, which led me to organize several Argentine Tango Milongas at Hamsteels Community Centre, Merryoaks Community Hall, and St James's Reformed Church.
Who are my classes for?
My tango classes are open to all ages and skill levels, from absolute beginners to seasoned dancers.
What to expect in my group classes
My classes are built on a foundation of strong technique, with a focus on the fundamentals of Argentine Tango. For beginners, we’ll start with the tango timing, the embrace, connection, balance, coordination, posture, and basic steps before advancing to more complex moves or figures. For more seasoned dancers, we’ll refine their technique, work on embellishments, explore more intricate and advanced figures, focus on the flow between movements, and deepen your understanding of musicality, creativity and improvisation to bring your dancing to the next level.
What should you wear?
You should bring comfortable clothes and slip-on shoes (with soft and slippery sole). If you don't have them, you can also do the class in socks!

"I have attended several of Luz's Argentine Tango lessons and they have helped me a great deal. She is strong on technique and consistency helping to build skills in a logical way from the ground up. She also includes useful exercises one can do at home and her lessons are fun too. What more could you want!"

"If you would like to learn authentic Argentine tango, I can highly recommend Luz’s classes. I have been dancing Argentine tango for more than 15 years travelling extensively around the UK and Europe, I have not come across many teachers equal to the passion Luz has for her students to learn this amazing dance. Luz with her natural grace and authentic Argentine heritage is for sure a teacher to guide you to the heights of Argentine tango."
Chris Storey
"We feel that your lessons with us - especially the private lessons - have always been thoughtful and tailored to our needs and abilities. Also, you have always been encouraging, and understanding of our sense of struggling to learn something new."
David and Liz
"We have always found interest in Tango music but have never considered dancing before despite having some prior experience with other latin dances. We came to the class with great expectations which were all met. Luz is a great Argentinian dancer and we found her style to be very inspiring. In her classes she always makes sure to push us to be better and there are no two classes that look or feel the same even if we are practicing the same moves. The class is fast paced but also adaptable if you ever need more time to learn a move or if you missed some of the classes and trying to catch up. She makes the learning process very easy to comprehend which is very important when dancing something as complex as Tango. Additionally, the atmosphere in our group is fantastic and we were even able to meet new friends there. In short, we are very happy with our decision to join this class and always look forward to every Monday.”
Juliana and Dmitrij
"I had never learned any dance before taking lessons with Luz. What stood out to me immediately was how safe and natural the learning process felt. There was no judgement about my starting point, just clear guidance and a sense that tango is a process rather than a destination.
Luz’s passion for dance is unmistakable. It feels like something she lives and breathes, and that kind of energy is genuinely infectious. Every lesson is challenging but never overwhelming and I'm left with a clear sense of the next step I'm taking in my tango journey.”
Jaise Newton
