Lu (Lucy) Yan is a Professor of Information Systems and John & Esther Reese Professor at the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University. Professor Yan investigates how social media changes the way people communicate and behave. Specifically, she models users’ behavior in online communities to provide design implications to foster social support exchange and users’ continuous participation. 

Professor Yan has received the Sandra A. Slaughter Early Career Award (INFORMS Information Systems Society 2020), the Young Researcher Award (WHITE 2012), ODT Scholar Award (2017), and is the nominee for Indiana University Outstanding Junior Faculty Award (2018). Her research has been nominated for Best Paper Award (CIST 2010, CIST 2011) and Best Student Paper Award (CIST 2011, CHITA 2017, CHITA 2018).

Professor Yan’s research interests include social media in healthcare, social and economic networks, patient-centric healthcare models, and social media in humanitarian operations. Professor Yan is an accomplished empirical researcher. Her recent focus is on the IT artifact design for healthcare interventions and deliveries, as well as IT implementation strategies for disaster relief operations. Her research has appeared in leading business journals such as Management Science, Information Systems Research, Production and Operations Management, and Journal of Management Information Systems, among others.

Professor Yan also works on interdisciplinary research on humanitarian operations. She has collaborated with colleagues in Operation Management to study how social media can be utilized to improve disaster management. Her interdisciplinary work examining the effectiveness of social communication between organizations and social media users received the Best Paper Award Runner-up at POMS 2016.

Professor Yan serves on Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Management Information Systems (2014–present) and IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management (2016–present), and is a Senior Editor at the Production and Operations Management journal (2019–present) and Associate Editor at the journal of  Information Systems Research (2021present). She also has served as an Associate Editor for International Conferences on Information Systems (ICIS, 2015–present).
