In the December 3, 1974 edition of the Baltimore Sun we learn:
Mr. Luther Wagner, 21, who lived in the first block of North Gorman Avenue in West Baltimore, was found in the 4800 block of Franklintown Road. Police initially thought he had been beaten to death but later found that he had been shot execution style at least twice in the back of the head. A detective proclaimed "It's just typical of a drug hit". Police said the victim's wallet was found with the body but it contained no money.
In the April 30, 1976 edition of the Baltimore Sun we find that Fred T. Sampson of the first block of South Calverton Road received a life sentence plus 15 years for the brutal murder of Luther Wagner. Testimony in the case revealed that Sampson shot the victim 5 times and then returned to the murder scene later, discovered Mr. Wagner was still alive and beat him with a tire iron, knocking out the victim's left eye. Mr. Sampson had went to the home of Michael Douglas, 29, in the 5000 block of Clifton Ave and said he had a "dude out in the car and I am going to zap him." Mr. Douglas was asked to help "zap" the man but the witness refused. Sampson left the house but returned about 30 minutes later with a woman friend and announced that "I just zapped the dude". The defendant then asked Mr. Douglas to help rod the victim but again the witnessed refused.
Mr. Sampson returned about 30 minutes later with a bloody tire iron and said the victim had been found still alive. Sampson left his bloody clothes at the home of Mr. Douglas and placed the tire iron in a bathtub.
The motive for the killing appeared to be jealousy because the victim reportedly had made advances to the defendant's girlfriend.
A search of the Maryland Inmate Locator in 2010 does not reveal any Fred Sampsons so he either died or was paroled. (I would think died) There are no listings in the case search for Fred T. Sampson either.
