1-2pm Lisel Haas Workshop: The Importance of Archives
with Clare Hewitt and Jaskirt Dhaliwal-Boora, in partnership with Bertz Associates
A workshop that explores the importance of archives, reflecting on the Lisel Haas’ archive exhibited in the Care & Defiance exhibition. The workshop will question how history has preserved women’s photographic archives and reflect on the importance of living archives amongst contemporary practitioners now.
This workshop is framed by the experience of Lisel Haas’ migration to Birmingham and her extensive photographic works that are currently being catalogued by Bertz Associates.
Clare Hewitt is the archivist on the Lisel Haas project, and Jaskirt Dhaliwal-Boora is the lead producer and curator of the Care & Defiance exhibition. The workshop is free to attend and open to anyone in the public, supported by National Heritage Lottery funding.

Care & Defiance: being a woman in photography today
The panel discussion will be a free public event which will give a focus to addressing the key themes of the exhibition. We will hear from the perspective of those who share our concerns about the present and offer a diverse range of practices, experiences and stories that shed light on the female perspective in photography. We are delighted to announce that our panel will include;
Carole Evans (POST photo collective founder),
Jemella Ukaegbu (UK Black Female Photography Community director)
Nicola Shipley (GRAIN Projects)
Safa Basharat Malik (open call winner)
and chaired by Rachel Segal Hamilton
The panel discussion has been made possible thanks to Birmingham City University's Research Investment Scheme.
All artist talks, workshops and events are free and open to the public and will take place at Centrala
