Artist & Art Teacher
Nic has always been an expressive person. Their creative life began in childhood, where piano, drawing, poetry, and fiber crafts were daily companions. Like many of their generation, they were discouraged from pursuing art as a career, and set those early interests aside.
College took them through math and the sciences, then into the United States Air Force as a linguist and translator. They finished a degree in Middle Eastern Language while serving. Through the military years, creative practice stayed close. Quieter. A thread rather than a vocation.
The COVID pandemic changed all that. What began as a way to stay busy during quarantine became a return to painting and classical methods. Many of Nic's digital pieces are from this period. When the world reopened, the noise of daily life pulled them back out, and the practice faded until 2024.
In preparation for a trip to their motherland, the Philippines, and onward to Vietnam, Nic committed to a season of intentional study with the Arizona Artists Guild and the Scottsdale Center of Arts, sharpening a practice meant to travel with them and to fill a journal with memories of adventures shared with their now-spouse, Junior.
After returning home, Nic and Junior realized how deeply they had fallen in love with Vietnam. They sold almost everything, and three months later, moved with their dog back to Da Nang. There, Nic began an art group at REALITY cafe, opening the practice to other budding artists in the city.
This exhibit is dedicated to Junior Denison, to the spaces that made room for this work, and to every student who joined the journey.

This piece was created using watercolor. The artist wanted to capture the warmth they felt during their time as an art teacher at REALITY through the vibrancy of the stained glass ceiling. May 2026

These pieces were created to practice Nic’s understanding of tone and value in order to add depth to the art and create more impact to the viewer using less.
11 | One of the first painted black and white portraits Nic painted while sitting at Seu Tea House in Danang during their first visit to Vietnam. February 2025
09 | Turns out that drawing and painting are two separate skills. Months of drawing faces until proportions closer to correct meant that it was time to try painting a face again, but it only highlighted the need to work on even brush strokes for an even skin tone. January 2026
01 | Finally, a face to be proud of. Painted after putting together the learned skills of drawing, brush control, and portraying emotion on a subject. April 2026

These human furniture pieces were inspired of one of Nic’s favorite artists Exotic Cancer. The pastel colors were a first attempt at using shared color palettes to create a series. The real question is "Are these inappropriate?" 2021
