Service

Throughout my academic career, I have undertaken several community service responsibilities. Some of these are the following ones:

Positions of responsibility at the University of Cantabria

1. President of the Junta del PDI of the University of Cantabria (board of elected union representatives of tenured academic staff). The essential task of this Board consists of negotiating with the University authorities all aspects of the professional life of tenured academic staff: promotions, salaries, working conditions, evaluations of teaching and research activities, new tenured positions, etc. I was elected for this position in several election terms:

   • • From April 2021 to Sept., 2023 (when I resigned due to strong disagreements with the trade union policy of CC.OO.).

     • From April, 2018 to April, 2019.

     • From March, 2007 to March, 2011.

2. Director of the Master in Mathematics & Computation in several terms:

   • • From Sept. 2018 to July, 2021.

     • From June, 2009 to May, 2013.

3. Deputy Director of the Department of Mathematics (Matesco) from Dec., 2004 to March, 2009.

4. Coordinator of the Ph.D. program in "Mathematics" (now extinct) during 90 months: From 1995 to 2002.

Elected representative in boards at the University of Cantabria

1. Elected member of the Junta de la Facultad de Ciencias (Elected board charged with determining teaching activities in Mathematics, Physics and Computer Engineering at the Faculty).  Several 4-years election terms:

• From 2002 to  April 2021 (several terms).

• From 1990 to 1993.

2. Elected member of the Junta del PDI (board of elected union representatives of tenured academic staff)  as representative of two unions. In September 2023, after 21 years of representing the CC.OO. union, I resigned from all my positions and ended my relationship with this union due to strong disagreements with their official policy. Then, I became a representative of the union UGT.  Several 4-years election terms:

• From Dec. 2002 to Sept. 2023, representing CC.OO (several terms).

• From March, 2024 to my retirement (Nov. 2024), representing U.G.T..

3.  Elected member of the Claustro de la Universidad de Cantabria (Academic Senate). Several 4-years election terms:

• From Nov. 2016 to June 2024 (several terms).

• From June 2002 to  Nov. 2012 (three terms).

Member of Boards and Committees outside the University of Cantabria.

1. Member of the National Committee for the Evaluation of the Research (CNEAI). This Committee evaluates the research activity of all tenured and permanent staff at the Spanish Universities. In my case in the activity of Mathematics. Two consecutive terms:  From Feb. 2013 to Feb., 2015.

2. Member of the Executive Board of the CC.OO. union of Teaching Federation. Several 4-years terms: From Sept. 2011 until I resigned (due to strong disagreements with the trade union policy of CC.OO.) in Sept. 2023

3.  Member of the Best Paper Award Committee of the journal AAECC: Years BPA 2021, BPA 2022.

4. Member of the Best Paper Award Committee of the  Journal of Complexity: Years BPAC 2005, BPA 2019,

5.  Evaluator of the ANEP: From 1996 to its extinction in 2017.

6.  Evaluator of the ANR: From 2012 to 2024.

1. Member of the Quality Committee for Postgraduate Studies of the Faculty of Sciences. From Sept., 2018 to July, 2021.

Research Projects

Throughout my academic career, I received various grants in the form of National Projects. In some, I was the Principal Investigator (head of the research team), and in others, I was a researcher (member of the research team). In 2019, I decided not to apply again for any national funding calls for Spanish research projects, due to a severe budget cut in basic research and a flawed policy by successive science ministries.
