(Unable to smile, I try to look profound)
You have reached Luis López's web page. I am a professor of Spanish linguistics at the University of Illinois Chicago. I got my PhD from Cornell University in 1995 and I have been affiliated with UIC since 1999. I am a theoretical linguist and my main research question is 'what is the nature of the human language faculty?' As a result of my endeavors, I have published four research monographs and many articles. For most of my career my scholarship has revolved around syntactic theory and its interfaces with semantics, phonology, morphology and information structure. I had the pleasure of (co) directing the Bilingualism Research Laboratory (now in Liliana Sánchez's capable hands), and I published several papers on code-switching with colleagues and students as well as a monograph on bilingual grammar. For the last few years I have become interested in pragmatics, which has furnished me with a wonderful excuse to read all kinds of interesting stuff on philosophy of language and philosophy of law. I am particularly concerned, both as a scholar and as a citizen, with the proliferation of lies in the public forum, which I firmly believe is a serious threat to our democracies.
