The Great Velvet Curtain Cavern

This installation expands the traditional boundaries of painting through exploring their sculptural form to resemble the experience of traversing a cave. The fluid materiality of the fabrics mimics the ever-changing forms of the cave itself, even if intangible to the human eye in a singular moment. Rivers carve away the rock to form negative space, stalactites and stalagmites grow at a rate of 1cm per 100 years, calcite drips from the cave roof not unlike the process driven techniques employed in the studio. Grant’s physicality in creating, painting, and forming the artwork is essential to its appearance and is irrevocably linked to the presence it exudes in an installation space.
