For the last 6 months, I returned to my research roots with a short term rotation as a Senior UX Researcher working on the Google Assistant operating in vehicle settings. Following this experience, I've accepted an offer from Amazon to work as a UX Researcher for advertiser experience on Amazon Ads.

It's been quite a year in many ways! Back in August of this year, I accepted a role as a Policy Advisor at Google, focusing on developing data-driven policies to enhance child safety on a wide range of Google products. Changing jobs and moving across the country in a global pandemic has certainly been an exciting experience, but I'm thrilled with my new role helping to counter online child sexual exploitation.

It feels like years have passed since February. During this frightening and uncertain time, some of my colleagues at the Society for Women's Health Research and myself have worked to create a resource page and some posts about various aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on women, such as this blog post I wrote on the impact of COVID-19 on women of color, or this one on managing endometriosis during the pandemic.

Check out this blog I wrote on the promise and peril of artificial intelligence in the context of women's health. Medicine has historically studied mainly white men. Although this may be improving, it means that much of the existing data available to be fed into machine learning algorithms comes from research that either only studied men or does not allow for later analyses to separate data by sex/gender. Efforts to apply artificial intelligence to health data should keep this in mind to guard against potential bias.

I'm delighted to share that I will be joining the Society for Women's Health Research as their new Director of Scientific Programs in June. Can't wait to learn a new scientific literature while contributing to an incredibly meaningful mission.
I was also recently quoted in an article about ethical data science in the private sector.

My fabulous co-author Vandana Janeja and I wrote a blog post on the need for increasing the participation of women (and underrepresented minorities) in data science. In this post, we detail some of the challenges that women face in this field, many of which are likely shared with other groups, and provide a call to action for us to ensure that the high-paying jobs of the future are representative of the diverse world in which we live.

I had the pleasure of serving as panelist on a panel on Data Ethics at the second Data Science Leadership Summit, which was held in Park City Utah in October of 2018. On this panel, I shared my experiences conducting research involving human research subjects, and particularly my experience working with infants and young children, a vulnerable population who require special protections.

A report that I co-authored with Jeanette Wing, Vandana Janeja, and Tyler Kloefkorn was published, which is a summary report capturing the inaugural Data Science Leadership Summit. This summit brought together university leadership and thought leaders in data science to share best practices and lessons learned with each other, as well as to engage in visioning and brainstorming activities.
I also wrote a science blogging guide, which was posted on Sci on the Fly, the AAAS S&TP Fellows' science policy blog.
August, 2018
My paper ("Insights from crossing research silos on visual and auditory attention"), with Karrie Godwin and Rochelle Newman, was just accepted to Current Directions in Psychological Science.
April, 2018
I co-authored an editorial with Meredith Lee and Natalie Evans Harris on the ethics surrounding data science, which was featured on Tech at Bloomberg and O'Reilly
I also wrote a blog post on children's attention, distractibility, and early learning environments that you can read on The Observer, the blog for the Association for Psychological Science. Check out the Blog Posts section of my site for additional writings.
I'm also now an editor for Sci on the Fly, the AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellows blog.

I'm thrilled to announce that I just started a fellowship through the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), which places scientists in federal agencies with the goal of bringing scientific expertise to policy. My hosting agency for this fellowship is the National Science Foundation, where I'll be working on projects related to Big Data.
You can read more about the AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellowship here.
I've also starting blogging about science for general audiences. So far I haven't created my own blog, but I've contributed several posts to The Learning Scientists Blog. Check out the new section on my site to read more and find links.
