About

Dr Lucien von Schomberg is a Senior Lecturer in Creativity and Innovation at the University of Greenwich. Additionally, he serves as the Academic Portfolio Lead in Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Sustainability, and is Programme Director for the BA in Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

As an internationally recognised scholar in responsible innovation, Lucien leads a wide range of research initiatives and has played a key role in EU-projects with a cumulative funding of £12 million. He is editorial board member of academic journals Philosophy of Management and NOvation, and guest editor of a special issue at the Journal of Responsible Innovation. Lucien has published in both philosophy and interdisciplinary journals, including Synthese, Philosophy & Technology, Journal of Responsible Innovation, and Philosophy of Management. He presented his work in conferences and workshops across Belgium, Brasil, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, Netherlands, Portugal, Türkiye, United Kingdom, and United States.

Lucien graduated with distinction in philosophy from the KU Leuven, where he specialised in continental philosophy with notable interest in existential phenomenology and traditional metaphysics. Subsequently, he pursued a PhD project in the field of responsible innovation at Wageningen University which he completed in 2022. During his PhD, Lucien went on research visits to Arizona State University and the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique, and worked as a research consultant for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. More recently, in 2023, Lucien served as Visiting Professor at the Federal University of Paraná.

Outside academia, Lucien is part of the ‘Future Leaders Steering Group’ at the Institute of Business Ethics (IBE) and sits on the advisory board of a VC-backed tech start-up. He is also an UEFA-Advanced licensed football coach with more than ten years of international coaching experience. He has previously worked for several professional football clubs, including AFC Ajax, KRC Genk, and Oud-Heverlee Leuven. In addition, Lucien takes professional acting courses at the London City Academy to incorporate drama-based techniques in his public speaking and teaching practices. He enjoys a multicultural background and is fluent in Dutch, English, Spanish, and French.
