My teaching philosophy is simple. I believe educational spaces should be:
Inclusive: Everyone should know they belong. Everyone should feel included.
Comprehensive: Physical, emotional, social, and mental wellbeing is vital for success.
Connected: Schools benefit from interactions with the broader community.
Positive: We all grow in a positive environment - celebrate, smile, laugh!
Previously, Lucia earned her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Davis. As a first-generation American, Lucia was the first member of her family to graduate from college and was a recipient of several grants and scholarships based on academic merit. Aside from her strong 3.59 GPA, Lucia graduated with highest departmental work and earned a departmental citation for her research paper on gender roles in children's literature, particularly Harry Potter. Her first presentation was at the Undergraduate Research Conference, where she presented her research to a standing-room-only crowd. She was also published in Prized Writing, a juried cross-curricular competition of undergraduate writing, for her piece "Sharing with Ninth Graders."
Upon graduation, Lucia attended California State University, Long Beach, where she earned two teaching credentials: one Single Subject English and one in Multiple Subjects. Since earning her credential, Lucia has continued to learn, working most recently to become a Google Level 1 Certified, Level 2 Certified, and Google for Education Trainer. She plans to attain her Masters in Education from the San Diego State University in Teacher Leadership beginning in Fall 2021.
Lucia is a very proud mother of three children, aged 8, 15, and 16. As a parent, she is actively involved in their school communities, serving as chair of the PTA Diversity and Equity Committee among other volunteer efforts. In 2020, she received her second Honorary Service Award for her continued service to local schools.
In her spare time, Lucia enjoys reading, writing, watching movies and television, and above all, traveling. She has visited 38 states with her family with hopes of visiting all 50 in her lifetime. She and her family lived abroad in Taiwan and the United Kingdom for a year while Lucia homeschooled her three children.
During the pandemic, Lucia created and moderates the Families Inside and Out and the Educators at Home Facebook groups.
