Is IoT technology secure or insecure? No, that is not a smart question; we already know the answer to that. Is IoT technology worth the risk? Yes, it is worth the risk. No. Privacy, integrity, and systems availability will be significantly diminished. It depends on the related circumstances and risks. Which alternative shall be the closest to reality?
The purpose of this research is to conclude whether IoT technology applied to healthcare is worth the risk. Although, more importantly, to what extent shall we accept the associated cybersecurity risk in pursuit of the alleged magical advantages? Should IoT technology applied to healthcare only monitor patient data or should it be able to perform a specific task by a user with remote control? Do we gain more than what we risk? Moreover, can we really answer the latter? IoT has been a buzzword for a long time. Much has been discussed and research about the topic: we already know that IoT, like any new technology, has well-known associated security risks. Nevertheless, do we know enough about its cyber risk environment to come up with a serious and informed answer? Or it is more likely an educated guess approach?
The hypothesis we are going to test is that IoT technology in the healthcare industry could be worth the risk but under certain constraints. We will examine the security implications and the risk environment - including the possibility of insecure software development. Lastly, we will identify and detail some possible solutions, improvements, or recommendations to lower the potential impact of IoT technology risks.
