Research, teaching, and services by the Chair of Resource Economics (RESEC) at the Center for Economic Research of ETH Zurich, led by Professor Lucas Bretschger 2003 - 2024, covered a broad range of theoretical and applied issues concerning the relationship between exhaustible and renewable natural resources, pollution, climate change, energy supply, international relations, and long-term economic development.
Of special interest were the dynamics of natural resource use, climate economics and policy, energy economics and quantitative modeling, environmental pollution and growth, empirical assessment of environmental impacts, endogenous growth, trade, and regional economics, as well as sustainable development.
Today, former Resec team members hold leading positions in academia and practice worldwide.
Lucas Bretschger started the Chair of Resource Economics (Resec) at ETH in 2003 and founded the MTEC department of ETH in 2004. He is the founder of the Monte Verità Conference on Sustainable Resource Use and Economic Dynamics (SURED) and organized the first ten editions. He introduced and organized the first five EAERE Winter Schools. The Chair hosted the EAERE annual conference in 2016 at ETH main building, when Lucas Bretschger was the President of the Association.
