Learning Together in Today's Classroom

To ensure all learners are prepared for success in their future pursuits, the move away from prescriptive, uniform curriculum, instruction, and assessment toward a competency-based system (CBE) is underway. Traditional teacher-centered environments are being replaced by student-centered ones. CBE and student-centered learning are recognized as mutually reinforcing. But, barriers remain that undermine the move from traditional classrooms and therefore the full benefits of CBE.

Teaching practices, especially at the secondary school level, have been slow to change. Convincing teachers and administrators to move away from the instructional status quo to one more student-centered is difficult. This is particularly true when there is a lack of student-centered instructional models appropriate for secondary settings and safe environments in which teachers can take risks and hone their practices.

LTTC supports bringing together teachers and administrators in a safe environment to learn what student-centered learning looks like. Our goal is to help learning systems establish communities in which teaching practices are elevated and high levels of learning become accessible to all learners.
