2022-2023 Class SYLLABi
WELCOME TO MRS. THOMPSON'S MATH CLASS!
Welcome to Mrs. Thompson's Math classes! We have an exciting year ahead of us, and I’m glad that each of you is here to share in it! When you leave class this year, I expect you to understand many interesting and helpful ways that math is used everyday, and I expect you to be well prepared for the next grade. We have a lot to learn, and we cannot afford to waste any time. This means that we must come to class ready to learn; we always have our supplies, and get started right away. If you need to sharpen a pencil, please take care of that before class.
Daily Supplies
Math binder or notebook, pencil, red correcting pen, and your planner.
I will be using the Anti-Bullying Rules in my class.
1. We will not bully others.
2. We will try to help students who are bullied.
3. We will try to include students who are left out.
4. If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.
We need to keep our classroom community safe for everyone to learn. We can do this by respecting ourselves, our classroom, and each other.
Bathroom
Please use time that is available to you during passing time to go to the bathroom. Do not interrupt the lesson to ask to use the restroom. If you absolutely must use the restroom, fill out a pass in your planner, and raise your hand so that I can initial it. As long as you have not abused this privilege, I will let you go. You should go directly to the bathroom, and come directly back to my classroom as quickly as possible.
Homework
Your homework must be completed EVERY DAY and will be kept in your binder. If you are absent, your assignment will be in your table folder. You can go online to our classroom website to get a copy of the notes you may have missed. You are responsible for finding out what work needs to be made up any time you miss class. Homework will be checked everyday in class. Your homework must be completed in pencil, and you must show all you work for every problem. You will correct you homework in ink. Most days, I will quickly answer any questions about the homework before we check it.
If you are sick, you have two days for every day that you were gone to get work made up. For example, if you are out sick for two days, you have four days to get the work from when you were sick turned in to me.
Tests/Quizzes
Quizzes measure how well you have mastered the topics from the last few lessons, and may be given unannounced. If you are actively participating in class, you will be well prepared. Tests will be given when a unit is complete, and will be made up of problems similar to those from your homework and classroom activities. All of my tests and quizzes will be open-note, but not open-book. If you miss a test or quiz, you must see me on the day you get back to schedule a make-up. If you know you are going to be gone in advance, you should come to reschedule the test in advance. If you do not make up a missed test, you will receive a zero.
Cheating
Copying someone else’s homework is cheating. If you take another student’s paper, and copy the work directly from the paper that is cheating. Getting help from another student is not cheating, but that should not involve looking at his or her paper. It is great to ask one of your fellow students for help on a problem. Both students benefit from this type of helping. However, copying doesn’t help either student. If you are caught copying off another student’s assignment, both you and that other students will receive a zero for that assignment.
Responsible Learning
The key to a successful and productive year is to be responsible for your own learning. That means:
• Be prepared for class
• Have assignments done on time
• Keep track of your redo papers
• Ask questions when you don’t understand something
• Get extra help if you need it
