Hybrid learning and working and students (Libby Odal & Drew King, Alumni)

The talk delves into hybrid learning's integration of in-person and online education, highlighting the benefits of flexibility and skill-building while acknowledging challenges like engagement, support and community

I'm Libby. I studied at Sheffield Hallam University for my BA in Digital Media Production and also completed an MA in Digital Media Management.  I'm now working at a small agency called Wildcat Digital in the paid advertising space which means I am sometimes the reason why you get strange ads on your Facebook feed when you're scrolling through (sorry).

I’m Drew. BA Hons Digital Media graduate from 2020, now working in agency at Journey Further as a Motion Designer & Animator.  Short but sweet career thus far has had me see studio, agency and freelance work. Alongside what I did and where I am, to this day I still go back into Hallam University to Special Guest Lecture as an in industry professional and teach first year students fundamentals of design, media along with sharing steps I took to find my feet within the world of work.

The Drawing Room

Come and meet the staff who have won awards today. Winners from the Inspirational Teaching, Outstanding Academic Advising, Outstanding Student Support and Inspirational Research Supervision award categories will be here to discuss best practice with colleagues. Using a World Café method, delegates can engage in conversation with award winners on what made them successful. Ideas generated from these conversations will be taken away and worked into case studies.

Effective Pedagogies for a Digital Landscape (Sue Beckingham and David Smith)

Digital technologies have opened up new possibilities for teaching and learning. This keynote will explore how digital pedagogies are transforming instruction across various learning environments - social, online, hybrid, and physical. The keynote will share examples of effective online pedagogies, including instructional videos, simulations, and ways to engage students. The benefits and challenges of online learning will be discussed, and key tools for learning online will be highlighted. The use of technology in traditional classrooms and labs will also be covered, including examples such as clickers, augmented/virtual reality, and makerspaces. The keynote will provide strategies for implementing digital pedagogies through professional development, infrastructure, and assessment. Participants will learn how to integrate digital tools and pedagogies to enhance teaching and learning across diverse learning spaces.

Sue Beckingham is an Associate Professor Learning and Teaching, a National Teaching Fellow, a Principal Lecturer and LTA Lead in Computing at Sheffield Hallam University. She is also a Certified Management and Business Educator, a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Fellow of the Staff and Educational Development Association, and a Visiting Fellow at Edge Hill University.

Her research interests include social media for learning and the use of technology to enhance active learning and teaching; and has published and presented this work nationally and internationally as an invited keynote speaker. She is a co-founder of the international weekly #LTHEchat 'Learning and Teaching in Higher Education Twitter Chat' and the Social Media for Learning in HE Conference. Sue is also an Editor for the Journal of Social Media for Learning and reviewer for the Journal of University Teaching & Learning Practice.

David Smith is a National Teaching Fellow and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His innovative practice has been awarded the Royal Society of Biology HE educator of the year award 2019 and recognised by his students with the Sheffield Hallam University Inspirational Teaching Award for the last ten years. David actively collaborates to develop and disseminate his own and others teaching practices, working both within his university and across the sector in learning, teaching and assessment groups. Through these activities, he builds technology-enhanced learning methods for student engagement in both the classroom and laboratory. Pedagogical publications are centred on student interaction and engagement. His biological research interests combine protein chemistry, cell culture and mass spectrometry to investigate the molecular basis of Parkinson's disease and cancer spheroid models. Studies focus on developing 3D cell culture models and investigating these through proteomics, metabolomics, and imaging technologies.

Drawing Room: JISC Discovery tool (Beth Fielding-Lloyd & Ian Glover)

Digital Capabilities enable people to thrive in an increasingly digital world and adapt to changes in the digital landscape as workers, learners and members of society. Every discipline will have slightly different priorities for digital capability, but the starting point for anyone wanting to develop their own or their students’ capabilities is to explore and understand their current set of capabilities. This session will offer an opportunity to work through the Jisc Discovery Tool, an online tool for staff and students to explore personal digital capabilities and produce a set of development actions. Attendees will need to bring a laptop or tablet to participate, and will have an opportunity to discuss their results and actions upon completing the tool.

Bring your laptops!

Old Banqueting Hall: Virtual engagement and COIL at SHU: A framework for innovation in internationalisation (Bee Gan & Anna-Maria Di-Betta)

Our students are growing up in an interconnected world, where global problems need global solutions. To help them to become effective global citizens, positioned to transform the society they live in for the better, SHU has pledged to provide all Undergraduate students with an opportunity to have an “International Experience” before Graduation. Historically, we achieved this “internationalisation” aim through opportunities to study, volunteer, and work abroad (physical mobility). However, “internationalisation at home” (Nilsson, 1999), that is, activities that use digital platforms to connect with international partners without the need to travel, has swiftly become a key tool to complement physical mobility, especially considering the small number of university student who are willing or can afford to spend time abroad (for SHU, less than 1% in 2021-22 for semester-long UG exchange). Among these online activities, Virtual Exchange (VE), with Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) at the most interactive end, offer a sustainable and inclusive alternative (Rubin & Guth, 2022) and their use is further encouraged by a wealth of literature highlighting their benefits (e.g., Hackett et al, 2023). To build our students’ intercultural literacies, we propose a progressive internationalisation framework, that gradually introduces such skills during their programme of study, and that can be flexibly integrated into existing programmes. The framework allows students to progress from the recognition of global issues and experience of intercultural viewpoints to active participation and collaboration with international peers and networks. The present paper will discuss the proposed framework, together with its benefits and challenges.

Reception Room: Is your assignment immune to inappropriate use of AI? (Jill Lebihan & Dave Darwent)

Bring along your assignment brief and join in with this interactive session where we explore how easy or difficult it would be for your students to make inappropriate use of Artificial Intelligence as they complete their submission. We also consider suitable ways to modify your assignments to decrease the risk of inappropriate AI use.

Main Hall: Online Courses: A new partnership approach to online courses at Sheffield Hallam (Luke Desforges)

Sheffield Hallam is partnering with HEP to design and deliver a new programme of Online Masters courses for home and international students. HEP have longstanding and wide experience of Online courses in Higher Education, with invaluable insight into how Universities can offer high quality online learning. This session will provide an introduction to the Online Project by the Sheffield Hallam project team, including the approach taken to course design and student academic support. There will also be an insight into HEP’s approach to online learning, such as how to produce a high quality resources for learning and assessment so that students make good progress towards their degree irrespective of where they are based around the world. The session will provide an opportunity for discussion of good practice for online learning.
