About
Window strikes are the second leading cause of human-driven bird mortality globally. In the United States alone, it's estimated that 500 million birds die annually from window collisions.
This problem can be mitigated, but we need to understand how many birds hit windows, when they hit windows, which species are most affected, and, most importantly, which buildings put birds at greatest risk.
Here at LSU we know that window strikes are a problem, but we haven't sampled in an way that will allow us to suggest solutions.
How to Help
Please help us by sampling buildings following our protocol.
1. Contact Dr. Phil Stouffer (pstouffer@lsu.edu), LSU School of Renewable Natural Resources
2. Sign up for the dates and the buildings you will survey at this link
3. Follow the survey protocol
4. Complete your survey and enter your data here whether or not you found any birds
5. Enter data for birds (live or dead) on iNaturalist.
6. Deposit bagged and labeled dead birds at the LSU Musuem of Natural Science or with Dr. Stouffer. In a pinch the bird can go into your freezer overnight.
