Julio is a third-year transfer student majoring in sociology and a prospective PhD student. Before moving to Berkeley, he spent three years at San Diego City College pursuing associate degrees in Sociology, Chicana/o Studies, and Social & Behavioral Sciences. His theses focused on the effects of hyperconsumerism in Starbucks stores upon partners during nationwide unionization, medical assimilation among low-income patients with adult-onset diseases, and the rehabilitation and policing of masculinity present in collegiate fraternities. His current research looks at the interpretations of Latinidad and how it is weaponized among Latinx student associations with other Latinés on campus, offering an insight into perceptions of panethnicity in the future.

I’m studying Media Studies at UC Berkeley, to equip myself with tools and knowledge that will help me engage with communities effectively. Coming from a family of collective immigrants, I believe I inherited a passion for helping communities. My desire for community participation and equity fuels my ambition to make a difference in the social justice sector. With that being said, I am currently exploring spaces with a curiosity and an open mind where I can make an impact and find community.

Mario is a first-generation child of Oaxacan immigrants and a senior transfer student at UC Berkeley majoring in Political Science. He previously earned his associate's degree from Chaffey College. His current research includes an assistantship on a project estimating the causal effects of ICE immigration raids on infant health outcomes and a senior thesis evaluating universal representation (publicly-funded deportation defense) in the Bay Area. After fieldwork with asylum seekers at the El Paso/Cd. Juárez border in 2023, Mario's interests piqued in Sociology, which he sees as the most fitting discipline to center the migrant experience in the context of the U.S Immigration system. He plans to apply to PhD programs in Sociology to continue this research agenda.
