Required Tasks & Assignments

Undergraduate Internship

Practice/Mock edTPA©

Teacher candidates will design a 3-5 consecutive lesson unit to teach in their Internship classroom.* This unit will be structured around the edTPA© performance assessment. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of content and pedagogy within the planning, teaching, and assessment of this unit. All students will video record their 3-5 lessons being taught.** The lesson plan format for the unit will be shared in class and models is provided on the Forms & Documents page (click here). Units will have a central focus for comprehending text and related skills that directly support that strategy. This unit will be designed over the course of multiple weeks in class and be taught close to Fall Break. Detailed directions and handbooks will be shared in class with ongoing support. Teacher candidates must ensure all students have a video release statement (click here) on file with the cooperating teacher prior to teaching your unit. *Elementary Education majors will design a reading comprehension unit.

**Swivl camera mounts can be checked out from the Office of Teacher Education.

Methods Course Assignments

Undergraduate teacher candidates in internship should refer to their course syllabi and/or Canvas website to review the fieldwork assignments associated with their methods courses.

Weekly Reflections

University supervisors will distribute weekly reflection topics to teacher candidates. Teacher candidates are required to respond to the prompts in the time frame assigned by the university supervisor.

Weekly Field Notes

Teacher candidates may be asked to submit a narrative description of their activities electronically to university supervisors each week as designated by the University Supervisor. Each submission should follow the following format:

  • Part I - Describe (in narrative form) how the day went in terms of schedule, activities you observed and/or participated in, lesson/subjects/content taught, etc. In other words, you are summarizing the day in specific enough terms for your supervisor to really understand how you spent your time. If you arrived late or left early, you should also document the reason in this section of your narrative.

  • Part II - Describe (specifically, completely, and in narrative form) and reflect on anything really positive that happened during the day. Particularly include anything that you might describe as an “aha moment!”

  • Part III - Describe (specifically, completely, and in narrative form) and reflect on anything that upset or concerned you during the day.

  • Part IV - Note any questions you have about ANYTHING. This is also the place to indicate anything you think you NEED to make this experience more productive and constructive for you, your clinical educator, or your students.

***Failure to submit a journal entry before midnight will result in a 1-point deduction from your final course grade. Journal entries not submitted after 1 week will result in a 5-point deduction from your final course grade.

Lesson Plans

Full-time student teachers must maintain a notebook (electronic or hard copy) of lesson plans available to the cooperating teacher and university supervisor. Student teachers are expected to submit lesson plan drafts and final schedules as required by the university supervisor.

During the first several weeks of student teaching, student teachers will submit lesson plans to university supervisors and clinical educators using the approved Lesson Plan Building Template (click here). Once the university supervisor and clinical educator are confident in the student teacher’s ability to design effective lessons using the Lesson Plan Building Template, they can approve the student teacher to submit lesson plans using the LRU Lesson Plan (Minimal) template and/or using the Activity Plan template.

Weekly Schedule (Elementary Education & Middle Grades Education)

Student teachers will submit a complete student teaching schedule to their university supervisor by the end of the day each Friday. The schedule summarizes the projected teaching schedule for the following week. The LRU Final Weekly Student Teaching Schedule is available online (click here).
