Abyssal Fennec
What is it: The Glass-Eyed Mergoblins are a diminutive race of amphibious creatures, easily identified by their scaly gray-green skin and sizeable webbed feet. Their most distinguishing feature is their large, protruding eyes, which are ink black beneath the water's surface but transform into a luminescent glaze reminiscent of sea glass when they are above water, earning them the human moniker "a-Kas’amat’an" or "Glass-Eyes."
Description: Known for their mischievous tendencies, mergoblins have a complex and often adversarial relationship with human inhabitants. Viewed as unsightly pests, mergoblins are frequently blamed for shipwrecks and mysterious drownings, illustrating their reputation for cunning and mischief. Despite these negative perceptions, a flip side to their nature exists—those who can look past the surface may uncover the unique charm and strength of mergoblin communal ties.
Notes from Explorers: The mergoblins, who refer to themselves as the “Awalu Rayhu” or the "First People," maintain an elaborate matriarchal society with a well-established hierarchy. Their communities are housed within intricate networks of underwater caves and tunnels. As skilled hunters and gatherers, they sustain themselves on a varied diet of aquatic plants and small fish. The matriarchal structure not only emphasizes the leadership roles of female mergoblins but also exemplifies an ordered yet affectionate social framework.
Details: Originally believed to have been surface goblins during prehistory, the mergoblins faced displacement with the arrival of human settlers in Area 8. As land was scarce in this archipelago, necessitated by the limited geography, the mergoblins were driven to seek refuge beneath the seas and the sparse island. This historical upheaval fortified their view of themselves as the "First People," setting humans in the role of colonizers within their cultural narrative.
Details: Thoroughly integrated into their aquatic habitat, mergoblins excel not only in hunting and gathering but also in maintaining a delicate balance with their environment. They cultivate a profound connection with the sea and its offerings, reflecting a symbiotic relationship meticulously fostered over generations.
