Understanding when and how to care for your trees helps keep them healthy, safe, and long-lasting. Below you’ll find seasonal tree care information to help you plan maintenance and prevent common tree problems.
Winter Tree Care (December–February)
Best time for pruning and removals. Trees are dormant, which reduces stress and disease risk. This is an ideal season for structural pruning and identifying dead or hazardous limbs.
Spring Tree Care (March–May)
Trees are focused on new growth. This is the time to inspect for disease, fungus, and insect activity. Light pruning only when necessary.
Summer Tree Care (June–August)
Storm season and high heat increase risk. Remove dead or dangerous limbs and monitor trees for drought stress. Emergency and storm-damage services are common during this time.
Fall Tree Care (September–November)
Preventative maintenance season. Selective pruning helps reduce storm damage and prepares trees for winter dormancy. A great time for overall tree health evaluations.
Remove weak or overextended limbs before storms
Proper pruning reduces wind resistance
Post-storm inspections prevent future damage
Dead or decaying limbs
Pest infestations (borers, caterpillars)
Fungal infections (powdery mildew, leaf spot)
Overgrown or crowded branches
Improper waterering-overwatering can be just as harmful as not watering enough
Mulch around the base of trees, not against the trunk
Water young trees during dry periods
Regular inspections keep trees healthy
