LOW Woodworkers Club

Welcome to the Lake of the Woods Woodworkers Club of Locust Grove, Virginia. This site is for the LOW Community to see what the Club is doing and to share ideas and projects. The LOW Woodworkers Club is dedicated to the sharing of skills, techniques, plans, and expertise with fellow woodworking hobbyists of varying degrees of skill and experience. The Club also works on projects that benefit the LOW community, such as artifact display cases in the LOW Clubhouse, the Dog Park pergola, golf course bluebird houses, sets for the LOW Players, and many others.

The club meets the 4th Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM in the Community Center Class Room 1, unless otherwise announced (see below). You are invited to attend the meetings and we hope you will become a member. Dues are $30 per year, and the Club year begins November 1.

Members Meeting To Be Held October 27 - Special Location, Special Time

The last Tuesday of this month (October) the LOW Woodworkers Club will have its monthly Members Meeting, again observing COVID precautions. The meeting will be held at the Classroom in the Community Center in LOW (Sweetbriar Park), NOT in the Craft Room. The meeting is open to Club Members and any LOW residents who have an interest in woodworking.

Because the Community Center closes at 5:00 PM, the meeting will start at 2:00 PM and run until about 4:00 PM.

Social distancing will be provided and masks will be required, as a number of our members are Seniors and some Members have health conditions which make them vulnerable. We understand that some members may not be able, or not yet feel comfortable to come to this meeting, but the board wanted to try a gradual, cautious return to our regular meeting routine. Further down this page is a picture of the July meeting.

We will be discussing future plans, upcoming events and Club projects. Members and guests are invited to bring along a project or samples of your work to display to fellow attendees. Time permitting, there will be a demonstration of skills and tools useful to woodworkers.

The LOW Woodworkers Club Second Annual 1” x 3” x 8 ’ Woodworking Challenge IS STILL ON for September 26, 2020!!

The event will be at the Lions Pavilion, Sweetbriar Park, on Saturday, September 26, 2020 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. Participants are asked to bring their projects to the Pavilion between 9:00 and 10:00 am. Visitors are encouraged to come by between 10 am -1:00 pm to look at the contest entries and learn more about the Club.

We will be practicing Social Distancing and wearing of face masks.

Contest winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd places) will be awarded prizes valued at $75, $50, and $25, respectively.

Contestants must use only one piece of 1” x 3” x 8’ pine to make anything they can imagine. The challenge will be open to all LOW residents as well as their immediate family members not residing within LOW. Students of the Orange County High School Carpentry Class are also eligible. Materials - Use only one piece of 1” x 3” x 8’ pine lumber (fasteners such as glue, nails, screws, hinges, etc., lighting, and finishes such as stain, paint, etc. will be permitted). No other materials can be used.

Submitting of entries - Each contestant must drop off his or her project at the LOW Woodworkers table at the Lions Shelter located at the LOW Community Center (Sweetbriar Park) on Saturday, September 26, 2020, between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM.

Judging - After the submission deadline, Judges will review all submitted projects and the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards will be presented at 1:00 PM on Saturday, September 26, 2020.

Judging Criteria - Projects will be judged on three criteria: Originality, Artistic presentation, and Woodworking techniques.

All participants may retrieve their projects on display at the close of the event on Saturday the 26th.

Announcing the 2020 1"x3"x8" Woodworking Challenge

Below are last year's submissions. The 2020 Challenge information follows.

The LOW Woodworkers Club is announcing its 3rd Annual 1” x 3” x 8’ Challenge to be held on September 26, 2020. What better way to keep your mind stimulated and hands occupied than by transforming a piece of wood into YOUR project. All it takes is a piece of 1” x 3” x 8’ pine lumber and IMAGINATION!

Our Club recognizes that our region is still in an impactful stage of the pandemic. Our prayers are with everyone. By looking out for each other and doing our part to stall the disease, we will get to the end of this ordeal in the best condition possible.

Rules for 1x3x8 Challenge.

Participants:

Residents of the Lake of the Woods or their family members living outside the lake;

Groups or organizations residing within the lake;

Students enrolled in the Orange County H. S. Carpentry Class.

(Members of LOW Woodworkers Club will not be eligible for prizes.)
