We’ve created a WhatsApp community to connect sailors and friends across the Caribbean who wish to take part in the collective response:
MELISSA RESPONSE – SOLIDARITY SAILING COMMUNITY
A community for everyone in or around the Caribbean sailing network who wishes to help with the response to Hurricane Melissa.
The idea is for each island to organize autonomously, based on its own capacity and resources, around three main actions:
- Collecting supplies
- Raising funds
- Transporting materials
Local initiatives are welcome, and inter-island sharing of good practices encouraged. We’ll be on the ground and not in a position to coordinate — so go ahead. Nothing you do will be wasted; the needs far exceed what we and the NGO can provide.
Within the WhatsApp community, you can join the group of the island where you live and self-organize with the people.
While each island and each cyclone requires specific responses, there are some urgent essentials you can already start collecting (see above).
If you have a boat and plan to sail to the affected areas, your help could be extremely valuable — especially if you have:
- A watermaker or desalinator
- The ability to charge phones
- Space on board to transport emergency supplies mentioned above
The Caribbean needs us — let’s act !
