The optimal time to paint a house exterior depends heavily on your local climate, but ideal conditions generally revolve around moderate weather to ensure proper adhesion, drying, and a smooth finish.
Key Ideal Conditions:
Temperature: Aim for air temperatures between 50°F and 85°F (10°C to 30°C), with many experts recommending 60°F to 85°F for best results. Paint may not adhere well or cure properly below 50°F, while above 85°F–90°F, it can dry too fast, causing issues like brush marks or poor leveling.
Humidity: Low to moderate levels, ideally 40% to 70%. High humidity slows drying and risks blistering or mildew, while very low humidity can cause overly rapid drying.
Sunlight and Wind: Avoid direct intense sunlight, which accelerates drying unevenly—paint on shaded sides or during cooler parts of the day (mid-morning to late afternoon). Light wind is fine, but strong gusts can lead to quick drying and debris sticking to wet paint.
Rain and Moisture: No rain in the forecast for at least 24–48 hours after painting, and ensure surfaces are fully dry (no dew or recent rain). Some paints require longer dry periods before exposure to moisture.
