Description: The dynamics and evolution of the Earth's accessible crust and lithosphere is clearly complex, however, relatively little is known about the deeper rocky mantle that underlies the tectonic plates and exchanges significant heat and matter with the surface environment over the Earth's history (and which also cools and drives core dynamics). Conceptions of the lower mantle have long been idealized as a simple highly viscous fluid-like medium whose viscosity regulates mixing and overturn of the mantle. However, geochemical and seismological observations reveal numerous complexities that falsify such a simplistic conception of the deep mantle, and motivate us to engage with numerous potential complexities in order to better understand this key region of our planet. The scientific aim of this workshop is to gather an international inter-disciplinary group of scientists who are engaging with these complexities in their research, and to stoke dialogue and new ideas for how we might tackle the challenges of understanding the feedbacks between mantle composition, structure, and evolution.
What is a "Mini-Workshop?" Our goal is to explore new ways for scientists to share their results and engage in dialogue internationally without leaving home. The constraints imposed by the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic and its associated travel restrictions present an opportunity to explore new modes of interaction to enhance scientific exchange that will mitigate the carbon footprint and financial cost of international travel, and enhance opportunities for participation, also in the post-pandemic future. This mini-workshop is an experiment, with limited time blocks (2 hours) each day that plausibly allows participants from across the globe to attend in real time. We hope to gather feedback from participants in order to make further adjustments and fine tune this format for posterity. Please let us know what you think, we'd like to hear your comments/suggestions.
Daily Plan: Short sessions, 2 hours each day. Sessions will begin with a short intro, followed by short invited talks (15-20 minutes each) for the first hour. The second hour will feature contributed mini-presentations (2 minutes each, maximum 2 slides) and panel discussion.
Registration:
Registration is now closed.
How to Connect and Participate:
Registered participants will receive an e-mail from the conveners containing the information necessary to join the sessions. If you do not receive this e-mail prior to the start of the mini-workshop, please check your spam/junk mail folder.
We plan to use Zoom, if you do not already have an account with Zoom, then it may be helpful to set one up in advance of the workshop.
Please join before the start time in order to ensure that your connection is working properly. We respect your time, and we will accordingly stick to the schedule.
