Rotary's anniversary

Rotary started with the vision of one man — Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships.

TUESDAY 23RD FEBRUARY 2021

A fun-filled action-packed night. I thought a small number of members booked to attend turned into a very full room.

Not too sure why this was the case. However, if you have not booked in with Terry Marshall and received an email confirmation by lunchtime every Monday, you will not be able to attend and sadly will miss out. If you did book and your name was not listed on the attendee list, please contact Terry asap. Covid rules are relaxing. However, we must not be complacent or impact on Emu Sports Club as last night extra tables needed to be organised and there were not enough bread rolls etc.

Frank Behl proudly told members that Peter & Lynda Sparkes had kindly donated a gnome in memory of David Cook that can be brought along to the Gnome Convention. Thank you Peter and Lynda for your kindness and wonderful Gnome.

Rotary International turned 116 years old on the 23rd of February, and the Dream Theme team ensured our members and guests enjoyed the celebrations. Irene created a beautiful fruit cake decorated with Rotary branding. Not only did it look great, but it tasted terrific. Thanks, Irene.

Karalyn and Irene had set up games in corners of the room, each activity costing a gold coin. The photos tell how much fun everyone had, and can I tell you quietly that golf is a serious sport and not for the faint-hearted hahaha. Each game had a winner, and the winners received trophies and prizes—what a great night and congratulations to Karalyn and Irene for all their hard work and creativity.

Winners;

  • Golf - Frank

  • Tube - Roger

  • Rat - Drew

There was no fine session tonight, as we all were having too much fun with the games and my purse was empty before the end of the night. Tonight raised $145.00. Well done everyone. Happy birthday to all the February babies!

Trivia Sat 20th Feb 2021

Thank you to all that attended on Saturday night for virtual Trivia. The Rotary Club of Upper Blue Mountains Sunrise organised the event to raise money for Wentworth Housing that supports homelessness in the Blue Mountains.

Jelly Beans, The Vicar, Gnoble Gnomes and SNAFU were the Top 4 finishes who all happen to be from our Club. Well done, and thank you to President Paul and his club for organising a great event.

Glenbrook Rotary Markets and Bookfair 20.02.21

The weather predicted heavy rains and storms on Saturday along with a few stall cancellations; however, the weather Saturday stayed dry, and we saw the return of the Rotary BBQ. Under Garry Smith and the team’s leadership, with support from our community, not a sausage, egg or steak was left at the end. It was great to see the BBQ return and a highlight for many of our members and a missed attraction at the markets. The Bookfair raised $500 and had a busy day also. Congratulations to everyone that volunteered on the day. President Michele presented earlier in the day a certificate of Appreciation to Shepherds Artisan Bakery, who recently donated the first market proceeds to our club to continue community projects.

Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation recognise these seven areas of focus as organisational priorities, and there are countless ways that Rotarians can address these needs locally and internationally.

Science and Engineering Challenge - Rotarian Volunteers Needed

The Science and Technology Challenge is on again this year after a fallow year in 2020. The immediate need is to fill the spaces at Sydney Olympic Park from 22 to 26 March. Usual arrangements and conditions. We will have some support from other organisations on Monday to Wednesday but Thursday and Friday look like being just Rotarians. So if you can come those days you will be especially welcome but still, welcome any other day. If you can manage more than one day, an extra smiley stamp. Please let David Ellyard know your availability if you are interested david@davidellyard.com .
