Bereaved Grandparents Day – 1 October
A day of remembrance, love, and gentle acknowledgement
Love beyond a lifetime.
Even in the grief, even in the pain… love continues.
Bereaved Grandparents Day, held every year on 1 October, is a gentle space to honour the quiet, often unspoken grief of grandparents who have lost a grandchild. It marks the beginning of Baby Loss Awareness Month with tenderness, remembrance, and recognition.
Why this day exists
Grandparents carry a unique kind of grief. They mourn the grandchild they never had the chance to watch grow, while also witnessing the heartbreak of their own child. It is a grief that is often overlooked, often unspoken, and rarely acknowledged, yet it is carried every day.
Bereaved Grandparents Day exists to:
🩶 Acknowledge the grief grandparents carry when a grandchild passes away
🩶 Honour the grandchild who is loved, remembered, and held beyond a lifetime
🩶 Recognise the unique heartbreak of losing a grandchild while supporting your own child
🩶 Create a space where grandparents feel seen, supported, and included
The symbol: Two Hearts
When a grandchild passes away, a grandparent’s heart is forever changed. The Two Hearts symbol honours:
a love that continues
a grief that is carried
a bond that lasts beyond a lifetime
Ways to Remember Your Grandchild on 1 October
There is no right or wrong way to honour a grandchild you miss. Here are some gentle, meaningful ways to remember them:
🩶 A moment of stillness where you pause, breathe, and think of them 🩶 Wearing a colour that reminds you of them
🩶 Playing a song that brings them close
🩶 Writing a small note and placing it somewhere meaningful
🩶 Whispering something to them, morning or night
🩶 Carrying a tiny token for the day
🩶 Doing one gentle act of kindness in their name
🩶 Eating or drinking something that holds a memory
🩶 Placing your hand over your heart, then over the Two Hearts symbol
🩶 Holding one memory close throughout the day
This day belongs to every grandparent who has loved and lost. Whether your grief is recent or many years old, you are welcome to mark it in whatever way feels right for you.
Remembering Together
Every grandparent already has their own ways of remembering a grandchild. Some memories are private. Some are shared. Some are spoken. Some are held quietly in the heart.
Bereaved Grandparents Day is not here to replace those personal moments; it is here to bring us together.
A day where grandparents all over the world pause for a moment and think of one another. A day where we remember our grandchildren and also remember each other. A day where no one carries this grief alone.
On 1 October, we honour our grandchildren with love, and we honour one another with understanding and gentle solidarity.
A note from the founder
This day was founded by me, Angela Rowe, also known as Nannie Angie, a grieving grandmother who understands this kind of love and loss.
It exists to honour the love we carry, the grandchildren we remember, and the quiet heartbreak we live with every day.
Bereaved Grandparents Day is an awareness day created to gently recognise grandparents who grieve quietly and across generations.
Organisations, charities, support groups, and community spaces are warmly invited to acknowledge Bereaved Grandparents Day on 1 October. Your support helps grandparents feel seen, included, and gently recognised within the wider landscape of losing a grandchild and the grief carried across generations.
