When I first read the summary of this book, I immediately added it to my TBR list because of the comps. I just found it very intriguing and was so excited to read it! Love Radio was a sweet story about opening yourself up to love.
Although his girlfriend of a year, Morgan, dumped him after moving to college recently, Prince genuinely believes in love, and he tries to give his friends good suggestions on how to handle their relationships. When the other guys challenge him to take his own relationship advice and put himself out there, Prince thinks of the girl he crushed on in Middle School, a crush that never completely faded.
Love Radio follows the narrative of two teens, Prince and Danielle, through alternating povs. Set in the Motor City, I was eager to delve into this book as I recognized all the sights and sounds detailed throughout the book. It showcases the beauty and culture of Detroit and the surrounding areas that I love and frequently visit. This YA novel plays off of some fun romance tropes as Danielle is a girl who hates romance coms and focuses on school, not boys. Meanwhile, Prince is the friend giving love advice and even has his own relationship radio show. The juxtapositions of the two make for an interesting romance to bloom and pulls the reader into the story immediately.
I also love how lyrical the writing is too. It matches the themes of writing and music and how it brings two seemingly opposites together, but also the true power of these art forms. This story tackles themes of coming of age, caring for loved ones, graduating from high school, and navigating friends and relationships in general. Both Prince and Danielle have been burned in the past and they do their best to try to overcome some of that trauma and work through it in order to find love.
Dani and Prince have a lot on their young shoulders, and neither of them have time for romance. Prince works as a young relationship expert for the local radio station, when he is not busy taking care of his mother with MS and his younger brother. Dani is struggling to write her essay to get into college, her ticket out to run away from the demons haunting her from that one harrowing night. And even though they least expect it, Prince gets his chance to finally put his relationship advice to the test to try to cultivate Dani falling in love with him.

I usually feel more of a connection to the female main character in romances for obvious reasons, but in Love Radio, Prince was my clear favorite. He was the absolute sweetest. I loved his interactions with his mom and little brother, his dedication to his DJing job, and his courtesy towards Dani.

Secondly, radio removes or solves the effort of content selection. Anyone who has fruitlessly scrolled through the Netflix or Amazon Prime menus on a Saturday night looking for a decent film will be familiar with this issue.
What this demonstrates is something quite profound. Our lives have been emphatically time-stamped by the music we hear collectively on the radio. This happens because radio, even today, still has a unique ability to take a song from obscurity, make it familiar and then elevate it to broad popularity.
Love Radio by Ebony LaDelle is an entertaining romcom all about falling in love. Featuring a radio host who must learn to take his own romantic advice, two realistic main characters, and heavier themes that bring even more depth to the adorable romance, this one checks many boxes for me. Fans of authors like Nicola Yoon will enjoy this sweet and thoughtful contemporary.

What I loved most about Love Radio is that it depicts a positive, healthy relationship between two young people who truly like each other for who they are. There is not even the slightest hint of insta-love or attraction based purely on the physical. Indeed, the physical is rarely mentioned. Rather, Dani and Prince get to know each other over time, and that learning only makes them like each other more. They appreciate the passions that they each have, Dani for writing and Prince for music. And what makes their relationship work is that they encourage and support those passions. They genuinely want the other person to be happy.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Love Radio is about the magic of radio and the influence of media in a society. The same frequency at which radio station Radio Libre des Mille Collines (RTLM) stirred up the population to kill the Tutsi in 1994, is now used to broadcast radio soap opera Musekeweya. The weekly program is incredibly popular, with approximately 80% of the Rwandan population listening in. The story takes place in two fictional villages, Muhumuro and Bumanzi. Despite the enmity, friendship ties between the villages exist as well. The love between Shema en Batamuriza is like a Rwandan Romeo and Juliet.
Besides Musekeweya, another story is discussed in the exhibition as well: the reality of Rwanda at present. In video-interviews, creators and listeners of the soap tell about their experiences and the developments in the country. Piece by piece, the complex reality comes forward and it becomes clear that the truth does not exist. While happy endings dominate the radio program, reconciliation is more difficult in real life. ff782bc1db
