Notes from The Directors

Zack-

Welcome to Love and Information at Carlos Hall! Here we’ve traded the stage for a building, the scenes are mobile, and perhaps most befudlingly, scenes happen simultaneously. Some scenes won’t be seen by everyone, some scenes might not be seen at all. So it goes. Humans are compulsive voyeurs, in that we’re always searching for meaning in the vulnerability of others. Here, for an evening, we might pry in on the lives of eleven somebodies wandering around, searching for connection.

To my team, enduringly generous in their creative flexibility, I say thank you. Without Zeke and Hailey, their combined good humors and theatrical brilliance, I couldn’t have organized any of this. Of this cast, diverse in their backgrounds and always willing to attempt the unexpected, I couldn’t be prouder. I’ve seen enough collective growth to justify this project a million times over. In acquiring this magnificent space, thank you to Abrianna for her guidance, Dooley’s Players for their correspondence, and of course the Art History Department for their unwavering patience and kindness.

It’s only been two weeks, but it’s been a trip. Here’s to more weird theater!

Hailey-

We’re so excited to share with everyone our weird, experimental interpretation of Caryl Churchill’s Love and Information! As the title suggests, this play explores themes of the acquisition and loss of love and knowledge in all its forms. Through a series of vignettes spread out through Carlos Hall, this piece invites the audience to act as detectives. Rather than being passive observers, they must take a more active role as they explore the space and guide their own experience. In this way, they are not only acting as voyeurs, peering in on intimate moments shared between the characters, but also are asked to engage deeply in the play’s themes as they, like the characters, seek out information.

First and foremost, I would like to thank our show’s primary director, Zack. Without his idea and the extraordinary time and effort he has put in to dissecting the text, this show never would’ve happened. To Zeke, without whom the whole production would not have run so smoothly, to the Dooley’s Players board for all their help and support in making this happen, the Art History department for allowing us to use their space, and last, but certainly not least, to our wonderful cast who has taken everything in such stride, showing up every day with an open mind and a willingness to experiment: thank you. I am so grateful to have played a part in this production, and to have collaborated with so many wonderful people!

A very special thanks to Theater Emory and the Emory Theater Studies department for all of their guidance and support, as well as to the Art History department for the opportunity to perform in Carlos Hall! This show could not have come together without your support, and we are extremely grateful!
