Balangoda Ananda Maitreya Thero (1896-1998) was one of the most respected and influential Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka and abroad. He was a prolific writer, a profound teacher, a skilled translator, and a master of meditation. He authored many books on Buddhism and Pali language, some of which are available for download in PDF format from this website. He also contributed to the preservation and propagation of Theravada Buddhism in various countries, especially India, where he participated in several Tripiaka Sagyans (councils for reciting and editing the Buddhist scriptures).

Balangoda Ananda Maitreya Thero was born on August 23, 1896 in Balangoda, a town in the Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. His parents were N.E. Mathis Appuhamy and B. Heen Menike. He lost his mother when he was two weeks old and was raised by his elder brother's family. He received his primary education at Balangoda Kumar Vidyalaya and later entered Colombo Ananda College in 1916. He excelled in his studies, especially in Buddhism and Pali language. He decided to renounce the worldly life at the age of 15 and was ordained as a novice monk on March 2, 1911 at Balangoda Uduwela Siri Nandaramaya under the guidance of Ven. Dhammananda Thero. His preceptor was Ven. Shilananda Thero of Deniyaya. He received his higher ordination on July 14, 1916 at Balangoda Ulugantota Udakukhepa Simamalaka under the auspices of Ven. Dhammarakkhita Thero.

Balangoda Ananda Maitreya Thero pursued his higher education at various institutions, both local and foreign. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Colombo University College in 1922 and became a lecturer of Buddhist Philosophy there. He also studied under eminent Indian yogis and scholars such as Krishnamurti and Parama Vijnanartha Samagama. He was one of the founding lecturers of Colombo Nalanda College in 1926 and taught there until 1966. He became the first professor of Buddhist Philosophy at Vidyodaya University (now Sri Jayewardenepura University) in 1954 and served as its dean of Buddhist Studies from 1963 to 1966. He also held several senior positions in various Buddhist organizations, such as the president of All Ceylon Amarapura Sangha Sabha, the chief Sanghanayaka of Sabaragamuwa Province, and the vice-president of World Fellowship of Buddhists.

Balangoda Ananda Maitreya Thero traveled extensively to spread the Dhamma and participate in inter-religious dialogues. His first foreign trip was to Kerala, India in 1926, where he met with Mahatma Gandhi and other prominent leaders. He also visited Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, China, Japan, Nepal, Tibet, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, USA, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Australia. He attended several Tripiaka Sagyans in India (1954), Burma (1956), Thailand (1961), Cambodia (1962) and Sri Lanka (1989). He also delivered lectures at many universities and institutions around the world.
