Reflections: ... (2023)
Reflections is a 200 page hardback comic made to mock the scholarly book for all its pompous exclusivity, whilst exploring themes of superstition, folklore and gesture. The comic expands on this absurdity of the intellectual, through the form of a lecture, inflates a topic lathered in nonsense to the standards of this exclusionary sub-sect. The performance of the lecture resolves around the lecturer’s uncommon appearance ,the fictional “H.G.B. level” and its relation to luck, leading to a satirical, pseudoscientific conclusion. As each spread of the comic was a whole panel, I treated the frame almost as a stage in a one act play. The lecturer’s luck depletes throughout the comic, as doppelgängers are traditionally depicted as harbingers of misfortune in folklore. I worked on a light box to create the illusion of slow subtle movement between pages, focusing heavily on controlling pacing and narrative.
