Turning vulnerability into strength through learning, utilizing, and offering peer support
PCIS is experiential in format, providing officers with the chance to talk through a particularly horrific or troublesome event in the presence of their law enforcement peers. As a group, the participants receive multiple types of training in emergency responder survival of traumatic stress and coping. Individually, the participants receive one-on-one support from members of the PCIS Peer Team and support from culturally relevant licensed mental and physical health professionals.
We also help connect Louisiana officers to PCIS in neighboring states when no seats are available in Louisiana.
Our society acknowledges and understands that the work of first responders exposes them to physical, emotional, and psychological stress during their time in service. Regular exposure to unusual, violent events that involve a perceived threat to, or actual loss of, human life and that may overwhelm an individual's usual coping mechanisms can cause extreme psychological distress. Unfortunately, the stress that the first responders face will, in turn, affect the first responder's family as well. The Post-Critical Incident Seminar (PCIS) addresses that first responders "get stuck" with strong feelings and emotions but fail to find effective means by which they can find a resolution.
No, PCIS has been around for many years.
This seminar format originated with the FBI in 1983. South Carolina LEAP has been hosting the PCIS in South Carolina since January 2000 and is currently in 14 states nationwide. Four other states are in the planning and development stage of offering PCIS.

The Louisiana Department of Public Safety Troopers and Employees Assistance Program (LA DPS TEAP) held the first Louisiana PCIS in March 2022. Since that first event, LA PCIS has hosted six additional seminars and assisted over 150 active and retired officers, spouses, and communications officers from over 40 in-state and five out-of-state agencies.
The overall goal of the PCIS is to turn vulnerability into strength through learning and the proper application of peer support. This experiential workshop is for responders who have "been there" yet have lasting effects on their lives despite the best support immediately following their critical incident.
Going through a critical incident is like crossing a fence with no opportunity to jump back. It can disrupt a responder's worldview and change them and those they love.
As a responder, you are vulnerable and have to emotionally come to grips with a reality that the uninitiated cannot understand. After experiencing critical incidents, the job, the street, and one's weapon are perceived differently.
The PCIS will provide education on trauma, patterns of resolution, and field-tested coping strategies to promote recovery and resilience. Peer support is an essential element of the PCIS. Discussing incidents with fellow emergency responders who have "been there" promotes normalization and recovery.
A Critical Incident is any event that results in an overwhelming sense of vulnerability and/or loss of control. These include line-of-duty shootings, being shot or seriously hurt on the job, high-speed pursuits that end in tragedy, events that bring prolonged and critical media attention, personal tragedies, and other similar incidents.
PCIS is for emergency responders who have "been there." Despite their best support, there can be long-lasting effects immediately following a critical incident.
A critical incident can rupture the basic worldview. Emergency responders are vulnerable and have to come to grips emotionally with a reality that others who have not experienced critical traumatic events cannot understand. The job, the street, and everyday events are perceived differently after a critical incident.
As training slots are limited, we may not be able to include everyone who wishes to participate in the program. Each planned PCIS will consist of up to 20 officers, spouses/significant others.
As the course fills up, a waiting list will be generated. The facilitators will be trained and experienced peers, mental health professionals, and chaplains. This program will be offered to any fire service employees, EMS/EMT, and sworn law enforcement officers, including but not limited to State Troopers, Sheriff’s Deputies, Local Police Officers, Federal Agents, Fire Service, and 911 Telecommunicators.
Over 150 participants have attended LA PCIS! The names and numbers of some of the past participants who have gone through PCIS are available if you'd like to speak with them.
